Neurofeedback

Strength Training for your Brain

leaf two.png

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback training, also called neurotherapy, neuro-biofeedback or EEG biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drugless method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. This is measured by placing sensors on the scalp, typically the forehead.

The sensors measure electrical activity of the brain and generate an Electroencephalogram (EEG). The feedback is typically in the form of a video display and sound or a multimedia display involving bars, graphs, video games and movies.

Four divisions of electrical impulses made by our brain, Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta are called “Frequency Bands”. These Frequency Bands tell us which parts of your brain are active and which frequency bands the brain should be using to complete a given task, activity or should be most active during different states of mind.

Connecting brain and heart

During normal daily activities such as paying the bills or managing tasks at school or work, certain areas of our brain will need to be active and using the faster frequency called Beta. On the other hand, if after a long day we wish to relax and wind down, a different part of the brain will need to be activated using the slower brainwave frequency called Alpha. The goal of Neurofeedback is to improve the brain’s ability to self-regulate, maintain flexibility, and smoothly shift between states of relaxation and arousal. Since the Brain also controls Attention Regulation, Emotional Regulation and Affect Regulation, this ultimately allows the entire Central Nervous System to resume normal functioning

This technology takes advantage of neuroplasticity

Or the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new connections. Neurofeedback “shows” the brain its own dysfunctional patterns, causing it to naturally learn, adapt, and grow into something better. Through this learning process, your brain creates new patterns that are more efficient and balanced – allowing you to feel more focused, relaxed, and in control.

Neurofeedback can be used alongside psychotherapy and/or medications and has been observed to be effective with numerous mental and neurological issues including:

  • ADD/ADHD

  • Chronic pain

  • Addiction of all kinds

  • Mood disorders

  • Obessissive thoughts

  • Symptoms related to autism

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Anger, irritability, grief, and sadness

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders

  • Migraines and severe headaches

  • Insomnia and sleep disorders

  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Concussions

  • Brain injury related to stroke

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Improve: focus, clarity, concentration, performance, and efficiency

More than 25 years of research has shown that neurofeedback training can alter the electrical activity in the brain and hence change the problematic presenting symptoms. Not only can it alter the brainwaves, it has been found through follow-up studies that the improvements gained with neurofeedback maintain at eighteen years after the initial treatments and it is believed to be permanent.

  • How much are sessions? How long are sessions?
Individual therapy sessions are $225 / 55-60 minutes.
  • Do you accept insurance?
No, I am considered an out of network provider (OON). I am happy to help you follow up with your insurance to see if they cover out of network reimbursement.
  • Do you offer a waitlist?
I do maintain a waitlist. Though, if I have a full caseload and can't make any room, I would be happy to provide referrals to colleagues that I trust and respect.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
I have a 24 hr. -cancellation policy. If you cancel within 24 hours of appointment, you will be billed for $95. Exceptions are negotiated on a case by case basis.
  • Do you treat children?
Absolutely! Children and adolescents are welcome. We treat children as young as 5 years of age.
  • Are there any risks with Neurofeedback training?
Neurofeedback is a noninvasive procedure that has been used for over 30 years. is generally considered to be safe and patients usually experience little-to-no negative side effects during and after treatment. It's generally considered to be safe and the majority of patients do not experience side effects while receiving neurofeedback training, however rare reactions may occur. It is important to remember that everyone is different and reactions to neurofeedback or side effects from sessions may vary. If you experience any side effects, it’s important to communicate that to your clinician so they can make adjustments to your treatment plan.
  • Does insurance cover Neurofeedback?
No, neurofeedback is not yet recognized by insurance companies as a medically necessary treatment. But we do provide discounted packages to help with the financial investment. We provide a superbill for your initial visit. Our patients generally get 40-60% back from their private insurance company if they have out of network benefits. Subsequent visits aren’t covered by insurance.
  • How long does each Neurofeedback session take?
Each Neurofeedback session may last anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes plus 15 minutes hook up and discussion. Initial goals may be met at 20 to 30 sessions. In very severe chronic conditions and cases of hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder, training may take 40 or more sessions. In the initial stages of learning, the sessions should be regular and frequent, at two or three sessions per week. Later, one or two sessions per week will suffice. Daily or even twice daily sessions may be recommended for certain circumstances. Progress is monitored and tested along the way to maximize effectiveness.
  • Is Neurofeedback covered by insurance?
Generally speaking, neurofeedback is not yet recognized by insurance companies as a medically necessary treatment. You may be eligible for insurance reimbursement for the assessment and neurofeedback training services we provide. We offer to bill your insurance (courtesy billing) or can provide you with a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Every insurance is different, so we encourage you to contact your insurance directly to discuss your particular benefits.

  • What happens during a Neurofeedback session?
Neurofeedback therapy consists of regular 20-45-minute sessions of training plus 15 minutes hook up and discussion. Small sensors are placed on your scalp which monitors your brain electrical activity. The results are fed through an EEG-based system (Bee Lab) and users are given real-time feedback (in the form of changes in a video display or sound pattern) to optimize their brain wave patterns. The computer program will then begin directing the client’s brainwave activity toward more desirable and controlled patterns through visual and auditory cues. They’ll get immediate feedback from the program when their brainwave patterns improve to reinforce those changes. By rewarding more healthy brain states, your brain learns to function better long-term. It’s simple and painless. All you need to do is show up and relax! Between sessions, clients may be able to notice changes in mood, stress, sleep patterns, or mental clarity. Note that neurofeedback takes place in an office or clinic. The person remains conscious and alert throughout the session, there is no sedation or medication involved, and they can return to their daily routine after the visit.
